Copy.ai Chat at $29 a month is the cheapest way for an agency to put AI writing in front of ten clients, and Jasper Pro at $69 a seat is the one that cannot do it at all. That is not a ranking of quality. It is a ranking of a constraint most agency owners never check before they buy: how many separate brand voices the plan is allowed to hold. Jasper Pro caps you at two, which is fine for a company and useless for a shop with a client list.

Agencies buy AI content tools on a different set of numbers than in-house teams do. You bill per client and pay per seat. You need more brand profiles than anyone else and you get charged for headcount you already have. And you are the segment that runs into the ceiling first, because everything in this category is priced for a business that has one brand.

Here is what the published pricing actually means once you put a client list behind it. All vendor prices were checked at jasper.ai/pricing, copy.ai/prices and writesonic.com/pricing on 1 September 2026.

What AI content tools cost an agency per client

Take a ten-client shop and price the plan each vendor would actually put you on.

Tool Plan that covers 10 client brands Monthly Per client
Copy.ai Chat, 5 seats, unlimited chat words $29 $2.90
Writesonic Growth, 3 seats, 50 articles total $399 $39.90
AutoMarketer Agency, 15 sites, 15 seats, white label $899 $89.90
Jasper Pro cannot hold 10 brand voices. Business is quote only, reported to start near $900 for 3 to 5 users Reported from about $900 About $90, reported

Copy.ai looks unbeatable in that table and in one narrow sense it is. Twenty-nine dollars for five seats and unlimited chat output is the lowest cost per word available from a mainstream vendor, and if your writers are already good and just need a faster first draft, stop reading and buy it.

The reason most agencies do not stop there is that Chat is a chat box. There is no workflow layer, no client separation, no white labeling, and the next self-serve plan Copy.ai publishes is Growth at $1,000 a month billed annually at $12,000. That is a thirty-four times jump with nothing between. So the honest framing is that Copy.ai is either extremely cheap or an enterprise contract, and there is no middle for a growing agency.

Set the tooling number against a retainer and it stops being the important variable anyway. Agency retainers for content and marketing commonly run $1,500 to $10,000 a month per client according to agency pricing guides, which is a reported range rather than a survey figure. At $89.90 a client, tooling is about 6 percent of a $1,500 retainer and under 1 percent of a $10,000 one. At $2.90 it rounds to nothing. Neither number decides whether the account is profitable.

The cap that actually breaks agency plans

Ask a vendor how many distinct brand voices the plan holds. It is the fastest way to find out whether a tool was designed for you.

Tool and plan Brand voices or client brands Seats Output limit
Jasper Pro, $69 per seat 2 brand voices, 5 knowledge assets, 3 audiences 1 per seat Not capped
Jasper Business Unlimited, quote only, 12 month minimum Unlimited Not capped
Copy.ai Chat, $29 Not published as a limit 5 Unlimited chat words
Writesonic Growth, $399 Not published as a limit 3, extra users $50 each 50 articles a month total
AutoMarketer Agency, $899 15 sites, each with its own brand profile 15 Fair use, not metered

Jasper is the clearest example because it publishes its limits, which is more than most of the category does. Two Brand Voices, five Knowledge assets and three Audiences on the Pro plan. Those are not obscure settings, they are the thing you are paying $69 a seat for. A four-person agency with twelve clients needs twelve brand voices and gets two, and the only route up is a Business contract with a twelve-month minimum and a sales call attached.

Writesonic has the opposite problem. It does not cap brands, it caps output: fifty AI articles a month on Growth, spread across every client you have. That is five articles per client per month at ten clients, before anyone asks for an extra piece. You can buy twenty more for $100, which works out at $5.00 an article, so the ceiling is soft. But it is a ceiling you will hit and plan around every month.

Where the money actually goes in an agency content operation

None of this is the real cost, and it is worth saying so on a page about tool pricing.

Every tool in this comparison starts from an empty prompt box. Somebody has to decide what the client's article is about, which audience it speaks to, what the offer is and what happens at the end of it. On a ten-client roster that is ten strategic decisions a month minimum, made by whoever on your team understands the client's business, and that person costs more per hour than every subscription in the table combined.

This is why agency margin tracks clients-per-strategist far more closely than it tracks software spend. We worked through that arithmetic in detail for social specifically in social media management for agencies and cost per client, and the finding transfers cleanly: doubling the number of clients one person can handle is worth an order of magnitude more than halving the tool bill.

The second hidden cost is retrieval. By year two a content agency has thousands of pieces sitting across drives, docs and a dozen client folders, and writers rewrite things the shop already produced because finding the old version takes longer than starting over. Pointing internal search at your own archive so a writer can find the version you already wrote for another client recovers hours that no writing tool touches, because the bottleneck there is not generation.

What to check before you sign

Four questions, in this order. They will cut your shortlist faster than a feature comparison.

How many client brands does the plan hold? Count your active clients, not your capacity. If the number is above two, Jasper Pro is out regardless of how good the output is.

What does the next tier up cost? On two of the three vendors here it is not published. If your agency will add three clients this year, find out now what the second step costs, because "contact sales" and "$1,000 a month" are very different answers and neither is on the pricing page you were reading.

How many seats are included, and what does an extra one cost? Copy.ai bundles five into $29. Writesonic charges $50 a user a month above the plan. Jasper is per seat from the first one. For a team of five that difference is the entire decision.

Can you put your own name on it? White labeling and client folders are agency-specific features and most of this category does not have them at self-serve prices. If you present drafts to clients, this matters more than the per-word cost.

Where AutoMarketer fits, and where it does not

AutoMarketer is priced flat per plan: $49 a month for 30 assets across SEO content and social, $149 for 150 assets adding email and Google Ads copy with 3 seats, $399 for 600 assets across all six channels with 5 seats, and $899 for the Agency plan with 15 client sites, 15 seats, client folders, API access and white labeling.

The thing it does that the others do not is skip the brief. You paste a client's website URL, it reads the public site, builds a brand profile covering what they sell and who buys it, and drafts content from that profile. For an agency onboarding a new client that removes the slowest part of week one.

The boundary is equally clear and you should weigh it before you switch anything. AutoMarketer does not publish to social networks, does not send email and does not manage ad accounts. Every asset lands in a review queue, you approve it, and you export or copy it into whatever the client already uses. If your value to clients is that you press publish for them, you still press publish.

At $89.90 a client on ten clients it is also not the cheapest option in the table above, and Copy.ai genuinely beats it on raw cost per word. What you are paying the difference for is client separation, brand profiles built without a brief, and a plan that does not need a sales call when you win an eleventh client.

If you want the full vendor-by-vendor breakdown with cost per finished piece, that lives on AI content creation tools. For the small-business version of this decision, the best AI content creation tools for small business compares the same vendors on a one-person budget, and marketing automation for agencies covers the wider stack.
